Bikeway Signs and Pavement Markings
Signs,
pavement markings and other traffic control devices for on-road
bikeways have been designed and installed to comply with the Manual
of Uniform Traffic Control Devices published by the Ontario Ministry
of Transportation (MTO), as well as the Transportation Association
of Canada (TAC) Bikeway Traffic Control Guidelines.
Below are a few
bikeway signs and pavement markings that should be considered at all times when cycling. For more

STOP SIGN
Cyclists must stop before entering the
intersection area and must not proceed until it is safe to
do so.

BICYCLE CROSSING
This sign means bicycles may be crossing
ahead.
|
|
BICYCLE ROUTE
This sign indicates that the road is an official bicycle
route.
|
|
NO BICYCLES OR PEDESTRIANS ALLOWED
This sign indicates that No Pedestrians or Bicycles are
allowed on these roads.

|
HILL SIGN
This sign is used when in advance of a
down-grade of 10% or more and where the length of the
down-grade is 50m or more.

SHARE THE ROAD SIGN
This sign tells motorists and cyclists that they must share
the road because it's the law.

|
RESERVED BICYCLE LANE SIGNS

Lane is reserved for
exclusive use by bicycles.

|
YIELD SIGN

Cyclists must yield the right of way,
stop if necessary, and must proceed
until it is safe to do so.

|
CYCLING PROHIBITED
Cycling is prohibited in a
specific area.
|
|
SINGLE FILE

When travelling in a group, travel
single file on the road. Never side
by
side.

|
DISMOUNT & WALK

Cyclists are required to dismount
and walk their bicycle in a specific
area.
|
SHARED PATHWAY SIGN
Cyclists and pedestrians are
permitted to use the path.
|
|
ONE WAY SIGN
Cyclists must travel only in the way
the direction of the arrow, on the road
or section of the road. |
PAVEMENT MARKINGS

This symbol is painted on the pavement. The
arrow
indicates the direction to ride. The diamond
symbol
is used to identify that the lane is
reserved. This bike
symbol means the lane is reserved for
bicycles. |
